Location

The course is set along Costa Rica’s tropical Pacific coastline but weaves at times into the Talamancas, a coastal mountain range in the Southwest corner of the country. You’ll finish near the border of Panama in a serene fishing village that until recently was only accessible by boat. 

Terrain: jungle and rainforest trails, mountain trail and single track across ridge lines, highlands and coastal ranges; beaches, rocky outcroppings and reefs, river and estuary crossings, and ends in Corcovado National Park, one of the premier rainforest experiences in the world as well as a Unesco World Heritage site. Much, much more. It really defies description!

The Coastal Challenge is open to individuals and teams of individuals, amateur and professional runners, but unlike any other ultra marathon, the TCC offers you a choice: to enter the Expedition or Adventure category. If you want to run hard and fast, the Expedition category is a true test for the more experienced runner. The Coastal Challenge is one of the world’s most inspiring and grueling multi-stage races. Running 236km in six stages, this race has  tested the mental toughness, will and endurance of some of the best ultra trail runners of the world as well as runners from all walks of life who have toed the line each year.

The course is set along Costa Rica’s tropical Pacific coastline but weaves at times into the Talamancas, a coastal mountain range in the Southwest corner of the country. You’ll finish near the border of Panama in a serene fishing village that until recently was only accessible by boat. Although simple in concept, the race will prove to be extremely difficult in terms of distance, terrain and the tropical climate. The heat and sun will take their toll and you may be severely tested at times. If you enjoy long distance running and adventure then the  Coastal Challenge is for you and will prove to be a tremendously rewarding achievement.

EVENT ITINERARY 2018

International participants Arrival Friday or Saturday, February 10 – 11

February – 11: Official registration and a poolside reception for competitors in San Jose.

February 12: Transport from San Jose to Quepos  – about 3.25 hours away.

Race Start and stage 1.
February 12: stage  1 – 36.4 k  Both Expedition and Adventure
February 13: stage 2 –  39 k     Expedition/22k Adventure
February 14: stage 3 – 48k       Expedition/6.2k Adventure
February 15: stage 4 – 37.5k    Expedition/19.8 Adventure
February 16: stage 5 – 47.5k     Both Expedition and Adventure
February 17: Final stage           Both Expedition and Adventure
Race Finish. Victory Loop back to Drakes Bay. We spend the day there on the beach. The awards ceremony and closing party will also take place here in Drakes Bay, a quiet fishing village just miles from the Border of Panama. We will depart for San Jose the following morning.
Saturday, February 18:  transport  back to The Best Western in San Jose. It’s about a 5 hour trip (1 hour boat and 3-4 by bus) and will leave by boat in the early morning at approximately 0800 to rendezvous with our bus .
